Frequently Asked Questions

The Latest In Low Carbon

Find answers to common questions about Low Carbon Technologies' (LCT) products and services.

Certification

Is LCT accredited to conduct and offer these certifications?

Yes. LCT is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Process Verified Program (PVP) service provider and has the distinction of having the first PVP for calculating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the beef production life cycle.

How do these programs support farmers and ranchers?
LCT helps producers position themselves for elite markets and earn product premiums by measuring the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of cattle on any operation. This third-party verifiable data and calculation enables farmers and ranchers to scientifically prove sustainable advancement to packers, retailers and ultimately consumers. Participation in LCT programming is voluntary and available to operations regardless of genetic source.
How are GHG emissions measured for Low Carbon Beef?

LCT's science-based certification programs utilize a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) to determine certification scores for candidate cattle based on management practices and cattle performance. This comprehensive analysis, from inception to processing, encompasses emissions originating from various points or phases within the beef value chain. Cattle are evaluated within 60 days of harvest on a scoring system that collects data from three categories: fertilizer, feed and function.

The USDA audits LCT annually to review calculation and analysis methods to ensure accuracy.

Where is Low Carbon Beef produced?
We work with farms, cattle ranches, feedyards, beef packers and others along the supply chain nationwide.
Is Low Carbon Beef Grass-Fed or Organic?

Not necessarily. LCT works with producers that follow both conventional and organic production methods. Grain- and grass-fed cattle can be certified under Low Carbon Beef as long as they meet program and pathway requirements.

Does low carbon certification impact the quality grade of the product?

No. Certified Low Carbon Beef will still be processed in packing facilities and qualify for the standard USDA grades based on a combination of factors including marbling, maturity and firmness. Quality grades such as Prime, Choice and Select are indications of quality regardless of program enrollment. The management practices and cattle performance measures that reduce GHG emissions are not expected to have a direct impact on quality grade. Producers take pride in offering specialized, high-quality products uniquely different than anything else on the market.

Can beef on dairy cattle be certified?
Beef on dairy crossbreds qualify for certification evaluation under our Low Carbon Beef program. Whether you're a dairy farmer that retains ownership, a beef feeder, or feedyard operator, maximize your returns today!
